Meta-learning is “learning how to learn.” Instead of piling on more hours, it focuses on the repeatable skills that make studying work: choosing the right method for the material, practicing in a way that builds recall, and reviewing based on evidence (what you can and can’t retrieve), not on how familiar something feels.
Think of it as a feedback loop. You set a goal (ace a unit test, pass a certification, learn a language module), pick a strategy (flashcards, practice problems, teaching the concept out loud), test yourself, then adjust based on the results. Over time, you get faster at selecting what works for you and for each subject.
1) Start with a tight target. Define what “done” means: a score, a chapter list, or a set of problem types you can solve without notes.
2) Use retrieval first. Before re-reading, try to recall: write what you know, do a few problems cold, or answer questions from memory. This exposes gaps immediately.
3) Track errors, not time. Keep a short “miss log” (concept, why you missed it, the correct rule). Your next session begins by fixing yesterday’s misses.
4) Mix and space. Rotate topics and revisit them over days. Spacing and interleaving feel harder, but they produce stronger long-term learning than cramming.
5) End with a next-step plan. After each session, note the one move that will raise your score the fastest (e.g., “drill stoichiometry setups,” “practice 10 past-tense sentences,” “redo missed derivative rules”).

Active recall is testing yourself from memory; spaced repetition is scheduling those tests over increasing intervals. They work best together: recall creates the signal, spacing makes it stick.
